Our favourite book about Lithuania

Our friend, Columbia J. Warren, offers a fresh and personal take on exploring Lithuania in this thoughtful travel guide.

Married to a Lithuanian woman, Jūratė, Columbia originally wrote the first version of this book for their own wedding guests. Instead of listing typical tourist spots, he shares meaningful places and cultural insights based on personal experiences and local recommendations. Both Columbia and Jūratė will be at the wedding, making this guide an even more special part of the celebration!

The book is provided as an e-book in EPUB format, which can be easily opened directly in the Books app on your iPhone, iPad, or other compatible devices. A PDF version can be accessed here.

Lithuanian Traditions

In Lithuania, on the way to their wedding festivities, the newlyweds pass through several gates, represented here by handmade woven sashes. We wish them the best life together and honor their union by demonstrating that all obstacles will fall when faced together with love.

The parents of the bride and groom present newlyweds with a tray of bread, salt, and water. Bread symbolizes that the newlyweds will respect one another and the traditions and customs of each other’s families. Salt represents longevity and that life sometimes has its difficulties. Water represents vitality, flow, and is a reminder that things in life will always change for the best.

Children’s Entertainment

We will have a dedicated team to engage children during both the pre-wedding celebration and wedding reception, with games and supervised activities throughout the event. A room where children could fall asleep or have a quiet break will be available. There will be adult supervision (until 2:00 AM) at this communal resting area, so that the adults could continue to celebrate.

Our Favorite Places to Sip,
Savor & Soak in the City

While you're here for the wedding, we hope you'll have time to explore Vilnius not just through its sights—but also through its food. Whether you're in the mood for a slow brunch, dinner with a view, or a taste of local flavors, we've put together a personal list of places we genuinely enjoy and often recommend.

Feel free to explore at your own pace—we think you’ll love them as much as we do.

Restaurants (Michelin-guided)

Cozy Places with Nice Views

Saint Germain

A beloved French-European bistro nestled on Literatų Street in the Old Town. It’s praised for its classic, charming ambiance, a curated wine list, and occasional pasta specials.

Vilnius TV Tower
Bistro-bar TOLIAI

The tallest structure in Lithuania at 326.5 m, featuring a revolving restaurant on the 19th floor (Paukščių takas) that completes a 360° rotation every ~45 minutes. More on wikipedia. Currently, the full restaurant is temporarily closed for renovation, but the bistro-bar “Toliai” (67th floor) and elevated terrace “Debesys” (68th) are open, offering spectacular panoramic views.

Georgian House

An atmospheric Georgian restaurant tucked in the heart of Old Town, delivering warm hospitality and authentic dishes like khachapuri and shashlik. Reviewers describe it as a “true hidden gem” with “exceptional” food and cozy decor.

14Horses

A Bib Gourmand farm-to-table restaurant located in a restored historic mansion in Senatorių Pasažas. Chef Justinas Misius crafts seasonal, sustainably-sourced multi-course menus, often personally guiding you through each dish. It blends a sleek Scandinavian aesthetic with cozy ambiance and ranks among the top 30 restaurants in Vilnius.

Traditional Lithuanian Food Restaurants

Stiklių Rūsys
(Stiklių Taverna)

Located in the historic basement of the Relais & Châteaux Stikliai Hotel in Vilnius’ Old Town, Stiklių Rūsys offers a refined take on traditional Lithuanian cuisine. Dishes include cepelinai (potato dumplings), potato pancakes with salmon, wild game sausages, and their famous “moss ice cream”—all made with ingredients from their own farm in Dubingiai. The restaurant’s atmospheric setting, with its brick vaults and soft lighting, makes for a truly memorable dining experience.

Amatininkai

Situated directly on Town Hall Square, Amatininkai is a classic spot to taste hearty Lithuanian food in a warm and traditional setting. The restaurant offers a range of well-prepared, home-style dishes — from cepelinai (potato dumplings) and kepta duona (fried bread with garlic) to kibinai (pastries filled with lamb or beef) — alongside a strong selection of local beers. This is a favorite for both locals and tourists looking for an authentic taste of Lithuania.

Food Courts

A relaxed outdoor space near Gediminas’ Hill that blends city park charm with a casual dining experience. Located by the Vilnelė River, this lively spot features street food stalls, picnic tables, and plenty of greenery—perfect for a laid-back lunch or snack while strolling or watching the singing fountain nearby. No reservation needed.

Misionierių kiemas

Set just beside the Subačiaus viewpoint, this scenic courtyard offers a relaxed, open-air atmosphere with food trucks, benches, and panoramic views over Vilnius Old Town. A perfect spot for a casual bite or drink while soaking in the city skyline.

Cafés & Brunch Spots We Love in Vilnius

A speciality coffee roastery and café with locations near the Museum region and Vokiečių Street. Known for excellent coffee, cinnamon buns, croque madame, and avocado toast. Cozy, popular with locals and takes card payments; opening roughly 8 AM–7 PM weekdays, 9 AM–5 PM weekends.

Museums & Cultural Sites

A stunning contemporary art museum designed by Daniel Libeskind, housing over 6,000 modern Lithuanian works dating from the 1950s onward. The museum hosts rotating exhibitions, film screenings, workshops, concerts, and a café-bistro. Ideal for art lovers and families.

One of the largest contemporary art venues in the Baltic region, located in the heart of Old Town. Exhibitions rotate regularly, and the museum houses a cinema and a permanent Fluxus cabinet dedicated to avant-garde artworks. A key cultural hub.

Located along Konstitucija Avenue, NDG offers extensive collections of Lithuanian and international modern art, often featuring extended evening opening hours (up to 24:00 Weekends). A quieter, off-the-beaten-path destination.

Museum of Occupations and Freedom Fights is housed in the former KGB headquarters, this sobering museum documents Soviet-era oppression—prison cells, a basement execution chamber, and artifacts telling the story of resistance and repression. Powerful and impactful.

A former prison (1905–2019) that now offers guided tours, daytime cultural events, and chilling Stranger Things filming lore. Visitors explore cells, corridors, and soak in dark historical context. Tours available daily and some at night. Read review.

An impressive reconstructed royal palace, originally built in the 15th century and restored between 2002–2009. It features grand interiors, archaeological galleries, medieval weaponry, music exhibitions, and immersive history tours.

Newest branch of the National Museum, this intimate historic house (16th–17th century) features thematic rooms exploring Lithuania’s identity—creativity, faith, struggles, global ties—and an immersive “Understanding Lithuania” exposition.

Join a guided walking (or bike) tour showcasing real filming sites of the HBO series Chernobyl. Highlights include locations doubling as Pripyat, the KGB Museum interior, and even Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant if arranged.

Explore Lithuania’s modern political heart where the 1990 Act declaring independence from the USSR was passed. Guided tours in English and Lithuanian are available on weekends—free, but prior registration is required.

Activities for Families with Children

Formerly Vilnius’s first power plant, this museum now features interactive science exhibits and historic industrial machinery—including a small selection of classic cars and motorcycles. Ideal for kids thanks to hands‑on zones like the Tesla coil room, control panel simulators, escape rooms, and roof terrace events.

Located in the historic 19th-century passenger hall of Vilnius Railway Station, this museum offers a fascinating mix of indoor and outdoor attractions that kids love:

  • Indoor exhibits spread across three themed halls (informational, cultural, educational) showcase ~900 artifacts including suitcases, signal equipment, worker tools, and life-size models. Preview.

  • Outdoor exhibition features 12 large-scale pieces—steam locomotives, wagons, a hand trolley you can ride, water pumps, heating boilers—all set on original tracks across 7,100 m². Preview

  • Hands-on fun includes VR train-driver experiences, interactive signal controls, and a dedicated “Children’s Station” with model railway and play platforms .

A historic 9 ha botanical park beside Gedimino Hill and Vilnelė River in the heart of Vilnius, with lush flower beds, rock garden, musical fountain, chess tables, pétanque court, open‑air library and the city’s oldest oak tree (~400 years old) . With a charming vintage carousel, multiple modern playgrounds, giant chessboard and outdoor board games – perfect for youngsters. Combines play zones with serene strolls, cultural events (fountain shows, seasonal festivals, concerts), and a botanical heritage dating to the 15th century.

Ropes & Zip‑Lines Adventure park. A high‑ropes course nestled in woodland just a few kilometres from the city centre. Features low and high ropes, rope bridges, Tarzan swings, zip-lines and a 16 m “Elephant Jump” free‑fall.

Course options has multiple difficulty levels – Orange (kids, 80 m/10 obstacles), Green, Blue, Red (longest 576 m, 26 obstacles, up to 12 m high), plus a brand‑new Black track for thrill‑seekers. Designed for all ages, with separate kids’ routes and family-friendly zip-line over the Neris River. Certified equipment, professional instructors, group or team‑building options including guided low/high rope programs.

For Exploring & Walking

A historic trio of fortifications (Upper, Lower & Crooked castles) from the 10th–18th centuries, perched where the Vilnelė meets the Neris river. The iconic Gediminas’ Tower, the lone survivor, stands 142 m above sea level. Climb to its summit for sweeping views and to see the Lithuanian tricolor hoisted each New Year’s Day . Today it’s part of the National Museum; exhibits inside the tower detail the castle’s history, Lithuanian statehood, and medieval defence .

Visitor tips: Accessible by a scenic walk or funicular. Check museum opening hours and combined ticket options.

A 12 m reinforced concrete memorial on Kalnai Park’s “Bald Hill” – a powerful symbol of resistance, remembrance, and national identity. Two legends surround its origins: one about 14 Franciscan martyrs in the 14th century, another linked to medieval self-governance. The present monument was designed in 1916, demolished under Soviet rule in 1950, and rebuilt in 1989. From the base’s viewing platform you’ll enjoy panoramic vistas of Vilnius Old Town, Bernardine Garden, and the rivers below.

Access: Open 24/7. Ideal for sunrise or after-dark visits, especially when the crosses are lit in special colors.

Vilnius’s largest park (≈160 ha), named after the river’s curve – just west of Old Town along the Neris riverbank. A true urban oasis: well-maintained trails for walking, running, cycling, roller-blading, and orienteering. In the park you can find a pond, playgrounds, cafés, and picnic & BBQ zones . A cultural hub with a central stage/amphitheatre that hosts major concerts and festivals – from Pope John Paul II’s 1993 mass to performances by Lady Gaga and fireworks events.

Open daily, 24/7, free entry.

Riverbank Walk along the Neris

A tranquil riverside promenade threading alongside Old Town. Perfect for a leisurely stroll, bike ride, or scoot. Discover hidden gems: under-bridge sculptures, café terraces, kayaking and boating activity, and a vibrant outdoor art gallery. Approx. 7 000 steps (~5 km), connecting Bernardine Garden, Gediminas Hill, and across to the Hill of Three Crosses via scenic paths. Ideal for relaxing, people-watching, or enjoying a riverside coffee. Check the route on Google Maps.

We usually recommend taking a hot air balloon flight over Trakai for its stunning views of the lakes and the iconic island castle. That said, several providers also offer flights directly from Vilnius, giving you the chance to admire the city’s skyline, Old Town, and green surroundings from the air.

Flights typically take place at sunrise or sunset, depending on weather. If you're interested, we recommend booking directly with one of the following reputable providers:

Please feel free to explore their websites and make a booking that suits your schedule and preferences.

Wedding Venue

Tony Resort

Tony Resort (previously Forest Lake Resort) in Trakai provides a stunning, natural setting for our wedding. Surrounded by lush forest and a peaceful lake, both the ceremony and reception will be held outdoors, allowing you to enjoy the fresh air and breathtaking views. The terrain is slightly hilly, so we recommend wearing comfortable shoes. While the paths are suitable for heels, flats or sneakers will be a bit more comfortable. As the evening progresses, it might get a bit cooler, so we suggest bringing a warm layer just in case. Expect a relaxed and scenic atmosphere, with nature taking center stage in the evening’s celebration.

The resort offers a range of amenities, including a lake beach, saunas, hiking trails, swamp paths, an adventure park, and more. Feel free to arrive early (with the first provided shuttle) and take full advantage of these activities. If you'd like to extend your stay at the resort, please let us know, and we’ll be happy to assist with the arrangements.
